Saddle hunting provides multiple options and allows you to be much more flexible than the traditional pre-set stands or even climbing stands that so many of us are accustomed to.
As I write this, it is mid-October, and I have noticed that the deer have begun using a newer trail that runs out onto a ridge that is just out of bow range for the pre-set stands that I already have in the area. There is a nice oak tree that sits in a perfect spot, and although the multitude of limbs give great cover, they prevent the use of many of the traditional stands.
Wanting to hunt this tree, my solution was simple. I ran a loop of paracord into the tree and will use it to set a climbing rope into. This will allow me to ascend the tree using the Single Rope Technique of a hand ascender and foot loop, going to a height that I feel gives me the advantage I need. At that point, I simply set a foot platform and I’m hunting!
Here’s the link to the YouTube video that I shot showing you the setup. Hope this helps!
