The Bachman Knot finds itself particularly well suited for use on wet or icy ropes. Using the Bachman Knot gives you a “handle” of sorts by tying a carabiner into the knot itself to give you something to grab into other than just the rope itself. Whether saddle hunting, rappelling, or using for other tactical/rescue options, this hand knot is a must-know!
This one way knot (it will only apply friction and stop you when weighted downward), is easy to tie, even with gloves on.
Begin with a standard prussic loop and clip one end of your carabiner into it. Holding the carabiner alongside your climbing line Then wrap the cord around both the carabiner and the rope itself, 3-5 times.
Tie yourself in, and remember, as with any knot, slowly apply weight to ensure that it is tied correctly and will hold before you use it at height.
