“Inertia is greatest force in the universe”
I’ve heard that term hundreds of times during my years of military service. It is used in a not so positive way to describe how a particular person or unit is refusing to change, and stuck in a rut of failure that is hindering their success.
Doing nothing, going with the flow, not rocking the boat. The anecdotes go on and on, but they all reinforce the same concept, it’s not easy to change our patterns and routines and step outside our comfort zones and push ourselves to the next level can be difficult. Almost impossible for some people or organizations.
My passion for saddle hunting exposes this fact. I distinctly remember a very difficult time I once had loading up a climbing stand onto a kayak before paddling across a lake for a hunt. I had previously been skeptical of the concept of saddle hunting. Skeptical right up until the moment I saw my friend show up with less than half the gear I was lugging. I often encounter people who want to discuss it, and have an interest in saddle or mobile hunting, but simply cannot get over their own preconceived notions about how deer hunting from height should look. They struggle to accept the fact that maybe there’s another way to do something-a way other than the way that they have done it for years.
The church I attend has helped me to realize that this attitude can infect all aspects of our lives. My church focuses on discipleship and moves away from the traditional menu of classes and Bible study that we have grown accustomed to. Instead of asking us to come back to the building frequently for classes or groups, they encourage us to go out into the community and serve, to seek out ways to fulfill the call of the Holy Spirit. This spirit of discipleship has led me to work with a Christian organization that focuses their ministry through athletic teams, and my wife has became deeply connected with a Christian organization that provides services to victims of human trafficking.
Whether it is in the way you approach your leisure time and hobbies or your service to God, don’t let inertia cripple you and affect your ability to live life to the fullest. Try new things, and let God show you where you can serve, even if it’s not where you expected it to be!
